Laura Nathanson, MDDr. Nathanson grew up as Laura Jean Walther, in Lakewood, Ohio, where her mother was a substitute teacher and her father serviced candy machines. Her sister, Elsa Walther Pendleton, and she attended the local public schools.

Thanks to a full scholarship, she obtained her B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard and, sans scholarship, her MD from Tufts School of Medicine. She went on to a Residency in Pediatrics at Boston City Hospital.

She married Charles Edward (Chuck) Nathanson, a Harvard classmate, in a ceremony given by her fellow 'house staff' and the faculty on the roof of Boston City Hospital, on June 26, 1972 (see photos below). She then entered a Fellowship in Peri-Neonatal (premature and high-risk newborns) medicine at Children's Hospital of Michigan, Detroit. She is Board Certified in Pediatrics and in Peri-Neonatology.

Their daughter Sara Paulina Nathanson was born in Detroit on August 19, 1973.

The family then moved from time to time, guided by Chuck's academic career in Sociology. Dr. Nathanson practiced in Littleton, New Hampshire and Amherst Massachusetts, before the family settled permanently in San Diego, California, in 1980.

She practiced pediatrics full time at El Camino Pediatrics in Encinitas from 1980 until the onset of her husband's illness in November, 2001, at which time she took an extended leave of absence. A few months after his death in June 2003, she returned to practice part time, but retired in August 2006. (Read Dr. Nathanson's Farewell Letter) She has written three childcare books, all published by HarperCollins. From 1994 to 2004 she was a contributor and monthly columnist at Parents Magazine. During her years of fulltime practice, and again in 2005/6, she has been named in the peer-selected list of Best Doctors in America.
